For approximately two thousand years, the Jewish people have born the great hope for the building of the Holy Temple. However, two thousand years of exile have caused us to forget not only the form of the House and the order of its services, but most meaningfully – its content and essence.

Thus, an absurd situation arose: millions of Jews throughout the world, who dream and yearn for the building of the Holy Temple, know little about its essence and content, and do not even understand what exactly it is that they are yearning for.

In the book “When the Holy Temple is Built,” Rabbi Ellituv presents the Kabbalistic explanations of the Hidden Dimension of Torah as they are elucidated in the Rebbe’s teachings. With masterful prose, he explains how every detail in the Temple—the structure, its chambers, its measurements, its vessels, and its services — conceals spiritual content and deep implication for our lives. Through the power of the Divine Presence resting in the Temple, these raise us to a life of elevation of soul and spirit, imbuing us with the power to choose good at every stage of our lives.

Many exceptional individuals people in the present era have labored and continue to labor on the holy task of reconstructing the form of the Holy Temple and its vessels, and of meticulously studying the laws associated with it and the various forms of service performed within it. Models of the Holy Temple and its vessels have been constructed and are available to all who wish to study them, but many fundamental questions concerning the substance and essence of the Temple, and its great significance to our lives as individuals and as a nation, remain unanswered.

What is the Holy Temple and what is the secret of its essence? Why is it the heartbeat of our nation and why is its rebuilding a such a pressing need for us? How is it the perfect expression of Hashem’s love for us? Why specifically in Jerusalem, what is the significance of the Holy City, and how does it relate to our people? What is the place of the Holy Temple in our individual lives and in the life of the nation? Why is it the source of our redemption and of our spiritual and political independence? Why is the redemption of our people intertwined with the rebuilding of the Temple? What is the significance of the services performed within it for our daily lives, and what message do they hold for our modern lives? What will we all feel upon the Indwelling of the Divine Presence that will occur with its building

and what will every Jew feel on that day when Hashem returns to His people and His home with love and great mercy, to dwell among us, after two thousand years of exile and concealment of His Divine Presence?

(From the Introduction)

Some two thousand years

since the destruction of our Holy Temple..

It is no wonder that many among us not only do not understand why the rebuilding of the Holy Temple is necessary, but are even put off by talk of its rebuilding. There are even some who view those who yearn for its rebuilding as dreamers gripped by false visions.

Because we are all like “children who have been exiled from our Father’s table,” it is not only that we have been exiled from our land and scattered among the nations, but the principal form that our modern exile takes is the spiritual exile from the table of our Father’s – the Master of the Universe—to the point that the vast majority of us do not even have a faint idea of what the Indwelling of the Divine Presence means, and what immense change will take place among us upon its return to Jerusalem.

Yet, we all have a share and a portion in the G-d of Israel and the Holy Temple, and not one Jew will be missing from around our Father’s table. From the moment we all understand how much the Holy Temple is related to and relevant to our individual lives, to the depth of our Jewish soul’s integrity, to a “standard of living” that is true and renewed, that holds a new message for the practical life of the individual, a total transformation for our lives as a society, and a huge and blessed change for our people that transforms us into a nation of G-d and a light unto the nations, as promised by Hashem through the prophet: “And nations shall walk by your light, and kings by the brightness of your rays”—then we will all pray for the Holy Temple as one, and yearn with all our might for its imminent rebuilding.
